Speakers.com Presents Marian Salzman: One of the Top Five Futurists in the World

salzman.jpgMarian Salzman, the world's reigning global trendspotter and "Trendmeister"..."Guru of Futurology" and "Trends Trailblazer"..are just a few of the honorary titles given to describe her. Named among the "top five futurists in the world" in 2004, along with Li Edelkoort, John Naisbitt, Faith Popcorn, and Peter Schwartz by the global publisher VNU, Salzman has an unmatched knack for telling businesses what consumers will want before they know it themselves.

Marian Salzman is also co-author of Next: Trends for the Near Future and Buzz: Harness the Power of Influence and Create Demand, as well as more than a dozen other nonfiction titles published over the past 10 years. She is executive vice president, director of strategic content, JWT Worldwide, and was formerly chief strategic officer of Euro RSCG Worldwide and creator of TBWA International's Department of the Future, headquartered in Amsterdam. Salzman is a popular media guest and is best known for popularizing such words (and the trends they represent) as wigger, singleton, and, most recently, metrosexual. Marian Salzman is a highly sought-after keynote speaker who has addressed myriad marketing and business organizations around the world.

men.jpgThe Future of Men explores cultural, social, biological, and economic changes, as well as media influences that have fundamentally altered the roles, relationships, and identities of the sexes. While Salman & her co-authors are American, their view is global—and for this work, they tapped interview subjects and reference materials from around the world, with considerable input from the U.S., the U.K., Australia, India, The Netherlands, and Turkey. Enter the latest buzzword: the "Ubersexual" and the "Age of M-ness." The Future of Men looks at this topic through two perspectives, sociological and commercial, examining causes and implications through the eyes of experts in consumerism and pop culture. It is a unique and media-savvy take on the near future of gender relations, with an emphasis on men. It provides the first comprehensive overview of what has taken place over the past three decades.

salzman2.jpgShe's the Bee's Knees—Marian Salzman Has a Knack for Telling You What You'll Be Doing Before You Know It Yourself," The Observer, June 23, 2003

You may not realize it, but Marian Salzman has already had a major influence on your life. As one of America's top futurists, it was Salzman who spotted that single

professional women would become the new free-spending yuppies (her research led to the infamous Time magazine cover story "Who Needs a Husband?" in August 2000). Salzman predicted the rise of 1970s fashion nostalgia. And, back in 1992, long before the rise of Eminem, she coined the word "wigger" on The Oprah Winfrey Show, identifying the cultural trend of suburban white kids kidnapping black street styles. ...As Salzman sees it, society increasingly operates through word-of-mouth, peer-driven transfer of information (i.e. gossip). And gossip is good. In a post-Enron world, where consumers are suspicious of the media and big business, we are far more likely to trust a friend to recommend a new bank or a car. So, Salzman insists, advertisers should be focusing on 'buzz' and positive brand-building, using gossipy, below-the-line techniques such as email, texting, flyers and chat rooms.
