Life Balance Strategist and Author ofStop Screaming at the Microwave! How to Connect Your Disconnected Life”

For fifteen years, as a busy mother with a demanding career on the faculty of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Director of the Hypertension Research Center, Mary LoVerde tried the ‘superperson’ route — and failed. Struggling valiantly to keep up, she turned to time management, prioritizing, delegating, and simplifying. Yet, she continued to feel overwhelmed and torn apart. One day, while furiously working away at her computer and shouting at the kids to keep their distance, she realized a startling fact. In her zeal to get everything done, she had become disconnected — from her family, from her work, and from the person she was and wanted to be. LoVerde adopted a new life motto: When you can’t keep up, CONNECT.

A dynamic international speaker, consultant, and writer, LoVerde is President of Life Balance, Inc. a company devoted to spreading the message of finding balance through connection. She speaks to diverse audiences across the country and also shares her empowering strategies with dozens of major corporations including AT&T, Merck and Company, Proctor and Gamble, Discover Card, Hallmark, Lucent Technologies, and the Mayo Clinic.

Best selling Author

She is the author of three best-selling books, Stop Screaming at the Microwave! How to Connect Your Disconnected Life (Simon & Schuster, 1998), Touching Tomorrow (2000), and I Used to Have a Handle on Life but It Broke (2002), and contributor to the best-selling inspirational collections, Chocolate for a Woman’s Soul and Chocolate for a Woman’s Heart.   LoVerde has touched many readers with her stories — including her gift of a “Memory Jar,” filled with handwritten reminiscences, to her mother. She presents a wealth of uplifting insights and innovative ideas for taking small steps in the right direction for a less stressful, more satisfying life. Her most recent book, The Invitation: When You’re Ready to Take Your Next Step was released in May 2012.

Her many media appearances include appearing on the Oprah Winfrey show four times & being  a featured life balance expert on ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings and on an ABC 20/20 special on stress.

Giving Back

Inspired by her mother, who was separated from her sisters and put into foster care at the age of nine, LoVerde is the national spokesperson for Camp to Belong, which reunites brothers and sisters placed in different foster homes for events of fun, emotional empowerment and sibling connection. She is blessed with family (her husband of twenty-one years, Joe, and their three children, Sarah, Emily and Nicholas), a rewarding career and a sense of personal fulfillment. LoVerde makes time to share family meals (though she hates to cook and considers pizza today’s pot roast), establish new family rituals (like feasting on gourmet takeout and singing carols by candlelight on Christmas Eve), and cheering each other on and laughing together — even when she’s on the road and far from home.

Education and Experience

Mary not only has a Masters in Medical-Surgical Nursing, she also has experience as an inpatient, emergency room and internal medicine clinical nurse practitioner.  She served on the faculty of the University of Colorado, School of Medicine for 15 years and directed the Hypertension Research Center.  Her work is published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medicine Association, and Clinical Research to name a few.  Mary was the winner of the Nellie Westerman Ethics Prize for her work in research.

Keeping Your Life In Balance When Cloning Yourself Won’t Work

The old ways of balancing our lives focused on how to do more: work harder and faster. Well, we have learned the hard way that what we have tried hasn't worked: we are busier than ever. If you feel like you can't get it all done, that there is just not enough time in your day -- well -- this is not your imagination. You have not failed in some way. There really is too much to do. Our current strategies involve going faster and faster, but if you are going in the wrong direction, speeding up doesn't help. Our problem is not a "need for speed," but rather a "correction of direction." So short of quitting your job and running away from home, what do you do when you can't keep up? In this humorous and idea-filled program you will come to realize that even though you will not ever ever ever again get "it" all done, there are innovative strategies that can bring harmony into your home and work life -- strategies that work equally well with both men and women. If you are black and blue from juggling it is time for the New Approach to Life Balance.

I have been in the trade association and convention management business for over twelve years, and I honestly have never been so inspired by any speaker like I have been by you. I consider myself a skeptic when it comes to professional speakers, allowing my "thirty second rule" to kick in when I am reviewing speaker demo tapes (If a speaker doesn't grab me in 30 seconds I am on to the next tape.) Your tape grabbed me to the point that I watched the entire thing- a first for me. I would like the other planners reading this letter to understand that you have a unique ability to captivate, inspire, and change the lives of people you come into contact with. And it is very obvious that people need to hear your message. Your presentation received a 4.7 out of five on our conference evaluations- the highest rating I can recall for a closing session speaker. Words used to describe you by conference attendees included: "inspired", "much needed reality check", "great send off", "bring her back!" Mary, thank you for making me look so good! It has been a great pleasure to work with you.

- Mary Connor- Executive Director | Fluid Power Distributor Association

To say that you were a smash hit at our management conference in Las Vegas would be an understatement. So many of the participants came to me after your presentation to tell me how deeply moved they were and how much it made them think about the need to to stay in touch with the people who are most important to them. That is exactly the life balance message we hoped they would receive. The added bonus is that they received it not only at an intellectual level, but much more powerfully, at an affective level which allowed them (including me) to give themselves permission to make the necessary changes going forward. You stimulated so much interaction and response that your session could have gone on for a significantly longer period to the benefit of us all. Should you wish to use my name as a reference for any future speaking engagements, please feel free to use my name, though I am sure your testimonials are adequate to keep you booked for the next five years!

- John Young, Executive Vice President | Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts

As a meeting planner, it is always a challenge to find a speaker who presents fresh ideas that will entertain, inspire and energize the audience. Your sessions were a high point of the conference, receiving the best possible ratings from all participants. The only complaints we got were that your sessions were too short, making it clear you struck a chord with our members. This is a high compliment from an audience comprised of busy top level real estate professionals who attend many meetings a year and are not easily impressed. The enthusiasm expressed by the attendees as they left your seesion was a testimonial to your talent and effectiveness. Your ability to move the audience and deliver a message that applies to people of all backgrounds is truly rare. I would highly recommend you to any meeting professional looking for a different kind of speaker-- one who entertains and inspires with a unique approach and provides ideas to help attendees strengthen their personal and professional lives. Thanks again for doing such a first rate job. In my five years as a meeting planner I have never worked with a speaker who delivered as much as you did
